A qualitative nuclear arms race and mounting great power tensions are increasing the risk of war by uncontrolled escalation. In 1914, the great powers drifted and stumbled into a war which none of them wanted, and which left their countries in ruins. This time the “guns of August” would be shooting thermonuclear warheads. Joseph Gerson of the Campaign for Peace, Disarmament and Human Security, and Bruce Knotts of the Unitarian Universalist Association office at the United Nations will discuss possible actions to reduce the risk of stumbling into catastrophe.
