Herman Melville’s Unitarian Compass
Melville scholars argued over the question of Melville’s religious beliefs, until Walter Kring, the minister of All Souls, found evidence in the 1970s that Melville and his family had rented a pew at the church for a number of years. Laura Pedersen will discuss how the author was influenced and inspired by the Unitarian thinkers of his day, and how those ideas went on to shape his work. No previous reading is required.
