Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem

Join us for a presentation of “Racially Charged: America’s Misdemeanor Problem,” a 35 minute film. Each year, over 13 million misdemeanor cases result in vast numbers of Americans being impoverished through fines and fees, and stripped of drivers’ licenses, jobs, and housing. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion with Derrick Hamilton, a formerly incarcerated man who became a jailhouse lawyer and Rebecca Brown, Director of Policy at the Innocence Project, who will provide an overview of why so many innocent people plead guilty to misdemeanors. We hope you will join us to learn more about this abuse of power rooted in our country’s history of racial injustice.
